Otter, Rev and Descript are cloud services on a monthly subscription — your audio is uploaded to their servers to be transcribed. Brethof Voice Pro does the same job on your own machine: one-time purchase, 30 transcription + 38 translation languages, nothing leaves your device.
No credit card for the trial. Linux & Windows. macOS on the roadmap.
Cloud transcription tools capture your voice on your machine, stream it to a data centre, transcribe it there, and send text back. Two costs come with that: a recurring bill that never ends, and your most sensitive recordings — client calls, patient notes, interviews with named sources — sitting on infrastructure you don't control. For a lot of work, that second cost isn't a preference. It's a compliance blocker.
The honest version — where a local tool wins, and where the trade-offs are.
| Cloud tools (Otter / Rev / Descript) | Brethof Voice Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Their cloud — audio uploaded | Your machine — nothing uploaded |
| Pricing model | Monthly / per-minute subscription | One-time purchase, own it forever |
| Works offline | No — needs a connection | Yes — no internet after setup |
| Translation | Limited / add-on | 38 languages, incl. SRT/VTT subtitles |
| Confidential audio | Often disqualified by policy | Stays on-device by design |
| Setup | Sign up, nothing to install | Download once (~80–160 MB) |
Legal, medical, journalism, research — if policy forbids uploading the audio, a cloud tool is off the table. Brethof Voice Pro keeps every recording on the device, so the compliant choice is also the easy one.
A subscription you keep paying versus a one-time purchase you own. If you transcribe regularly, the maths stops being close pretty quickly.
Turn a recording into a transcript and then into subtitles in another language — SRT/VTT with timings kept, optional bilingual output, 38 languages, all offline. No per-character translation bill.
Transcription accuracy is competitive with the cloud's go-to model: ~4.5% word error rate on English (measured after a quick on-device fine-tune), where OpenAI's Whisper Large-v3 sits at 7.4% on the same audio. Translation quality is comparable to Google Gemini 3.1 Pro on the FLORES-200 benchmark (XCOMET-XXL) — from a model small enough to run on your own GPU, and it can be trained further on your own voice for accents and field vocabulary.
14-day free trial, every feature unlocked, no credit card. Download for Linux or Windows, run it offline, and see your own transcripts before you decide.
