Grok Build review

Open source, any model, and no account needed

Tested on Linux · Freemium · Open source

Grok Build is SpaceXSI's AI coding agent for the terminal, from the company formerly called xAI, open source since July 2026. It plans, edits and runs code, takes comments on its plan step by step, and can run other models from one config file. We tested it on Linux.

The good

  • Open source, Apache 2.0. Grok Build is open source under the Apache licence: the whole tool can be read, forked and built.
  • Any model, one config file. Any model you add in one config file shows up right in the same model picker as Grok's. Our Ollama models worked and switched mid-session.
  • A plan you can comment on. Plan mode blocks the edit tools, so you can comment on single plan steps and answer multiple-choice question cards before it edits your files.

The not so good

  • Open, but closed to outside work. Grok Build's repo is open to read, but it's a mirror of SpaceXSI's private code, synced every few weeks, and the README says outside contributions are not accepted.
  • Unclear allowance. Grok Build's usage comes from a weekly pool shared with chat, images and video, but no number is published, and Free is only described as Limited, which makes planning hard.

Our verdict

Recommended

Open source, any model from one config file, no account needed, and a plan you comment on step by step; telemetry was off in our test. The unpublished usage pool and a repo closed to outside work hold it back.
