OpenCode CLI review

Free, open, any model, but it rarely asks first

Tested on Linux · Free · Open source

OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent for the terminal from Anomaly. It supports 75+ model providers including local Ollama, switches between plan and build agents with one key, and can undo its changes. We tested OpenCode 2 on Linux.

The good

  • Any model, Ollama built in. OpenCode is MIT licensed, and our Ollama models show up on their own. We can even switch models mid-session.
  • Plan and build with one key. We like that one key does the work: press Shift+Tab to switch between the plan agent, which can't edit files, and the build agent.
  • Undo that gives your prompt back. We love that /undo restores both the files and the conversation, and even hands your prompt back so you can edit it.

The not so good

  • Two versions at once. Two versions ship at once: the README's install line still gives version 1, and version 2 lacks the language servers and sharing its homepage advertises.
  • Trusting by default. OpenCode's build agent edits files and runs commands without asking first; only secrets files and folders outside the project ask. You have to add ask rules yourself.

Our verdict

Recommended

MIT licensed and free, with Ollama built in and an undo that restores your files and your prompt. Against it: two major versions ship at once, the README's install line still gives the old one, and it runs commands without asking.
