Personal license now covers solo and freelance work

A small but meaningful change to how we define Personal vs Business. Here is what moved and why.

When we first drafted the licence, the line read: "Personal license is for non-commercial use only." That phrasing came from a different kind of software — creative tools, hobby games, things where commercial use is a clear upgrade tier.

Voice Pro is not that. The first people who bought it were translators, writers, therapists, lawyers, journalists, small agency owners, and a bunch of self-employed consultants. Every single one of them is "commercial" in some technical sense. Almost none of them are a "team".

The new definition

  • Personal ($49) — for individuals. Includes solo business owners, freelancers, contractors, and self-employed professionals. Up to 2 machines for the same person (e.g. desktop + laptop).
  • Business ($149/seat) — for teams and organisations. One seat per user. Volume discounts at 10, 25, 50, and 100 seats.

The distinction is now individual vs team, not hobbyist vs commercial. Simpler, honest, and it matches how people actually use the product.

What if you already bought Personal?

Nothing changes for you. Your license covers the same use cases under both the old and new wording — we widened the definition, we did not narrow it. If you were unsure whether your use was allowed before, it is now.

When do you need Business?

If you are buying licenses for other people. A marketing agency with four writers, a law firm with six associates, a transcription company with two staff — those all need Business. One person running an LLC with one employee (themselves) does not.

The practical test: "Am I buying this for me, or for someone else to use?" If someone else will be typing with it, you need a seat for them.
